What constitutes ‘QUALITY EDUCATION’? – Opinion poll by Adhyayan

Adhyayan was really excited to be a part of the InspirED January Conference in Mumbai and the opportunity to interact with practitioners and thinkers in the field of education throughout its vibrant two day programme.

InspireED, Mumbai was buzzing with the exchange of ideas, innovative practices, policy debates and thought provoking activities. We were delighted to interact and exchange ideas with the delegates, especially at the Adhyayan stall. Our  KPA Wheel was a real hit.

What is the Adhyayan KPA Wheel all about?

Adhyayan has created a diagnostic tool for assessing the quality of education provided by schools, founded on internationally acclaimed best practices within school systems. The Key Performance Area (KPA) Wheel we displayed at the conference provides a quick glance at the six KPAs which make up the Adhyayan Self-review diagnostic. The six KPAs are Leadership and Management, Teaching and Learning, The Child, The Curriculum, Community and Partnerships and Infrastructure and Resources.

The diagnostic provides schools with a framework for their self review team to review their own school and support its external validation by the adhyayan assessor team. Its  162 guidance statements of what good looks helps the school to make expert judgements of their effectiveness which it can then compare with the external teams assessment. At the end of the review, the school is awarded ‘The Adhyayan Standard of Educational Excellence’ which is a robust, internationally credible quality standard.

Here is what the delegates had to say about what they thought was important in the KPA wheel:

On both the days, the ‘quality of learning’ was rated by delegates as the most important factor for determining the quality of school education). Interestingly, ‘student’s voice’ and ‘extending student’s learning’ were also seen as significant. Most participants believed that the extent of ‘child-centred’ approaches that the school adopts, impacts significantly on the quality of education provided by the school. Many others rated ‘effective use of resources’, ‘classroom environment’, ‘effectiveness and efficiency’ and ‘school parent relationship’ as important.

 What good ‘quality of learning’ looks like? 

  • Students of mixed ability are working together in the classroom
  • All students are equally involved in their learning
  • Students are able to relate to the subject matter being taught
  • The subject matter reflects student’s beliefs in equality
  • Marking by teachers help students understand how they can improve their work

    The KPA are surely reflective of a dynamic learning environment in any school. I was struck by “the child” standing alone as an indicator of change.
    Taking from there, the thought is that perhaps “the Teacher” may be a powerful area of change , although this is definitely implicit in parameters like “teaching-learning” .
    The thought behind this argument is that the teacher may not merely be an implementer of a ‘teaching-learning’ environment; but recognized for excellence ( not only through the output she achieves) but through the level of her commitment to personal and professional growth.
    Professional development has been researched to be powerful if it is
    a) Reflective in practice ( A visible written record of – what went well in my class-not so well-why so ? solution finding, etc)
    b) Mediated practice ( all growth may be self-paced but hand-held by a Mentor- even a Virtual Mentor- who guides, scaffolds and appreciates through the journey)
    c) Networked practice : Leveraging the offerings of 21st century technology to connect with ever widening circles of sharing and support from educators distanced by geography .
    d) Formative : Change is internalized when it is incremental and situated in daily practice ( with Mentor Feedback and Self Reflection happening through each exploration of pedagogy )
    A teacher, thus may be at any level on the continuum of ‘excellence’ but may stand out as an exemplary ‘learner’ , thus according due respect to learning rather than ‘achieving’.

    Extremely thought provoking Sadhana. Thanks for sharing. I would just like to add that teacher’s professional growth is captured in the key performance area (KPA) Leadership and Management. Further, while discussing leadership and management, we emphasize on aligning personal goals with professional being critical to a person’s growth. Hope to hear your views more often!!!
