AQS Collaborative School Review

Read this short story about how Adhyayan’s AQS Review helped Father Crispino D’Souza make a small yet transformative change to his school that had a lasting impact on the students and school community.

In the vibrant city of Mumbai, Father Crispino D’Souza, the Director of Don Bosco International School, embarked on a transformative journey using Adhyayan’s Collaborative Review process. This comprehensive review, grounded in scientific methods and six Key Performance Areas (KPAs), revealed valuable insights into the school’s performance. Equipped with this data, Father D’Souza made a small yet impactful change: he adjusted the school timetable to include a physical activity period before classes began.

This simple addition had a profound effect. Students became more engaged and enthusiastic, their attitudes towards school improved dramatically, and the community praised the school for its responsiveness to students’ needs and its innovative approach. Through Adhyayan’s detailed and data-driven review, Father D’Souza not only enhanced his school’s environment but also inspired a wave of positive change that resonated throughout the entire community.

Six Key Performance Areas

The AQS framework consists of six Key Performance Areas (KPAs) with 18 Key Questions and 54 Sub-Questions, supported by 162 Judgment Statements specifically designed for Indian schools. Developed through extensive research and assessment practices, it aligns with international standards.

Adhyayan’s School Improvement Support and Training initiative (ASIST)

At St Joseph’s High School, the ASIST Programme truly came to life through the efforts of Nita, Haenik, and Gomathi. Nita and Haenik led an inspiring Read Aloud programme for the English teachers, rekindling the joy of storytelling. They brought back the childhood wonder of reading aloud, where books became mirrors, windows, and doors into new worlds for students of all ages.

Meanwhile, Gomathi, a skilled educator and Khan Academy trainer, focused on the Maths teachers. She introduced them to the Khan Academy app, guiding them to explore the wonders of mathematics. By November 2023, Pritesh followed up with a session to address the teachers’ queries. The Maths teachers from Years 6 to 9 had fully embraced the app, creating classrooms and assigning work to students, who were now more engaged and showing marked improvement in their performance. Despite some challenges with alignment to the state board syllabus, the teachers felt empowered and enthusiastic about the changes they were witnessing.

This transformation at St Joseph’s was made possible through the ASIST Programme—Adhyayan’s School Improvement Support and Training initiative. ASIST is designed to help schools unlock their full potential, equipping teachers, leaders, and students with the skills and knowledge needed to transform their school environment. The programme offers flexible capacity-building options, including face-to-face, online, and blended formats, tailored to meet the specific needs of each school. Through ASIST, Nita, Haenik, and Gomathi helped bring out the best in both teachers and students at St Joseph’s High School.

The Assessor Programme (TAP)

At the heart of the Adhyayan Assessor Programme (TAP), educators like Nita and Soniya embark on transformative journeys as assessors. Nita’s experience began with her first review at Heritage Xperiential Learning School in Gurgaon, where, as an intern, she witnessed firsthand the powerful impact of the review process. Returning as an associate two years later, she was struck by the significant changes within the school and the crucial role assessors play in driving improvements. This experience deepened her understanding of how assessors can truly facilitate meaningful change.

Soniya’s pivotal moment came during a review at a CMS School in Lucknow. Observing the lead congratulate the school team and celebrate their achievements on the final day was a profound learning experience for her. It highlighted that the review process isn’t just about evaluation but about fostering growth and acknowledging progress. Soniya learned to approach reviews with a perspective that emphasises development and support rather than mere judgement.

The TAP programme is a certification scheme designed to advance educators’ professional growth, enabling them to become accredited Adhyayan Assessors. By enrolling in courses on our Moodle E-Learning Platform, participating in school reviews, and conducting action research, educators like Nita and Soniya work together towards reaching over 100,000 schools across India. Their shared vision is ‘a good school for every child,’ making each assessment a step towards a brighter educational future.

Adhyayan’s expertise in training, curriculum assessment, and research has led to some fascinating work through the Collaborative Research Studio. Notably, it allowed us to form a consortium for the World Bank-funded NECTAR project in Nagaland. We also teamed up with The Unifly Collective on the AQS School Reviews, helping to train their assessors to conduct school reviews for low-cost private schools.
Adhyayan’s team of Khan Academy Certified trainers renewed their certification in April 2022 and March 2023, adding two new members. They conducted acclaimed training sessions for educators and mentors across various states and organisations.
